Just in case anyone is wondering, moms (biological as well as those who are functionally mothers) are still critically and fundamentally important. They always have been and always will be. Even though motherhood had been through the blender over the last several decades, their importance remains unchanged and should be unchallenged. We neglect this foundational truth to our poverty and peril.
- In Matthew 15:1-9, Christ told some people that their worship of God was in vain because they weren’t taking care of their elderly mothers (and fathers).
- While on the cross, Jesus gave instructions for the care of His mother (John 19:25-27).
Churches are (and will continue to be) filled with good and not-so-good traditions. As we try to weed out the latter, let’s make sure we leave Mother’s Day alone. Anything honoring parents just sounds like a good idea. And when you take into consideration the erosion of the nuclear family that we’ve witnessed over the last generation, we can’t afford to forget mom!
To couch it in current technological terms—there’s no app for moms, so you better make sure you take special care of the one God has given you.
Centuries ago, these words were written in honor of mothers:
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. (Proverbs 31:27-31)
Moms—thanks for all you do and all that you are. We don’t want to think of what the world would be like without you. I hope you have a blessed Mother’s Day!
