Sheila’s Great Escape

Say “hello” or maybe “g’day” to Sheila.

If you think you had a tough day Tuesday, think about Sheila’s day. Sheila is the personal pet of a family who operates a 500-acre animal ranch and pumpkin patch in Auburn, Alabama, called Choctafaula. It is billed as “Auburn’s Natural Escape.” Apparently, Sheila took the escape part to heart and headed off for a big adventure. She made it to the interstate (I-85) and started traveling south toward Tuskegee.

Just between you and me, I don’t think she had a lot of experience out on the highway. She leaped on to the hood of a car but apparently couldn’t get any traction and slid right off.  In the video I saw, she was hopping on the left shoulder of the road, then cut across both lanes (no turn signal at all) before going down into the grass off the right side. Anyway, I guess it all evened out—the drivers on I-85 apparently didn’t have any experience driving with a kangaroo around and there was a minor two-car accident, but no one was hurt. State troopers, Macon County deputies, and the Game and Fish Department all were on the scene. Both sides of the interstate ended up being closed for a while.

As for Sheila, her traffic violations finally caught up with her. The owner of the ranch darted her and took her to the Auburn Vet Clinic where she was treated and later released. There’s no word yet on whether she’ll have to attend weekend driving school.
