The Beatitudes are rich with multiple layers of meaning. Here’s a paraphrase I did a while back in an effort to uncover some of the treasures found in them. I hope it makes you think. Better yet, maybe it will make you want to try coming up with your own paraphrase!
Blessed are those who recognize their spiritual poverty apart from God. This opens the door for them to experience the richness of God’s reign.
Blessed are those who choose to mourn over sin, death, and brokenness, for they will experience the comfort that comes from God.
Blessed are those who choose to live by faith rather than by force; they will receive the blessings of God.
Blessed are those who live with the mission of mercy, for they will receive what they have given.
Blessed are those whose hearts are hungry and their spirits are thirsty for what is good, right, and true, for their souls will be satisfied.
Blessed are those who have made their lives about seeking God’s kingdom, for their pure heart will give them powerful vision.
Blessed are those who work for peace. They are like God, because peace is the work of God.
Blessed are those who take a hit because they belong to God. They are in excellent company and have a great reward.
