Sleepless in Babylon

King of the world! That’s what Nebuchadnezzar is. He could literally say, “Jump!” and everyone would ask, “How high?” After all, he’s defeated the Assyrians, Egyptians, and his kingdom knows no rival. He is on the top of the world!

But the king of the world can’t get a good night’s sleep. He can control everything except what happens in the one place we all look to for refuge, rest, and renewal—our bedroom.

The king who has everything in the world, can’t get the one thing he really wants and needs. And the reason He can’t sleep is God has sent him a disturbing dream. Despite all the power and protection surrounding him, Nebuchadnezzar is vulnerable. Although he lives in a mighty fortress and walled city so that none of his enemies can possibly reach him, God has no problem accessing the king’s most private chamber.

That puts the kingship and power of everyone who rules into perspective, doesn’t it?

That’s precisely what Daniel wants us to see and appreciate.
